We invite applications for a PhD Student position in the Department of Geoscience at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). The graduate student will receive one of 15 newly awarded NSF EPSCoR Graduate Fellowships (EGFP) in the department. Each Fellowship provides a $37,000 annual stipend for 4 years, along with a tuition and fee waiver. Fellows have 5 years to utilize EGFP funds.
The graduate student will have the opportunity to choose their topic within the research areas of the arid lands hydrology group. The focus of our group is on hydrologic modeling, biocrust hydrology, hydrologic scaling, data assimilation, and machine learning. Through active collaborations, our group has access to unique datasets, including (i) the SEPHAS Lysimeters operated by the the Desert Research Institute (DRI), (ii) the Landscape Evolution Observatory at Biosphere 2 operated by the University of Arizona, and (iii) Lake Mead data through the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA). The graduate student will closely interact with an international team of researchers at UNLV and partner institutions.
The ideal candidate will have a background in hydrologic modeling as well as excellent communication skills. Experience with programming and machine learning methods is desirable. In addition the EGFP has the following eligibility requirements:
- Have received the distinction of GRFP Honorable Mention no more than three years before applying.
- Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or permanent resident.
- Intend to enroll or be enrolled full-time in the UNLV Geoscience graduate program at the start of the Fellowship.
- Have not previously accepted a GRFP or EGFP Fellowship.
- Not a current NSF employee.
